Sure, in the early years criminals may have been early adopters using Crypto for illegal activities. The criminals may have seen it as a way to get ahead of authorities who did not have any knowledge of this technology and software. However, now, criminals have learned that it is a very bad idea.
It has become a false narrative that criminals mainly use Crypto for illegal activity. Crypto is built using a public ledger that anyone can see. Transactions are being engraved in history forever and are transparent to anyone. Enforcement is able to follow the forensic trail every time the digital currency changes hands. While their identity may be anonymous on the Blockchain temporarily, eventually someone will need to try to convert it to physical cash. Once this happens, the whole operation will be exposed.
So, if you’re a criminal, you’re better off transacting in a dark alley using cash. That way there is no evidence and the cash is hard to track down.
